WasteStart, an Irish technology startup, has raised £1.45 million (€1.65 million) in funding to advance the development of its enterprise software for the waste sector.

The startup was founded by former Advanced Manufacturing Control Systems (AMCS) Group executives Austin Ryan and John Wallace.

The funding round was led by Tribal VC, Conor Stanley and Barry Mulligan’s venture fund, and Tom Kennedy, co-founder of Hostelworld.

Corporate advisory support was provided by Hugh O’Neill’s firm Hogan & Associates, which also took a small equity stake in the company, while Wallace Corporate Counsel acted as legal advisor.

EPR platform for waste industry

Founded earlier this year, WasteStart is developing an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system designed specifically for waste and recycling operators.

The platform will assist collectors with job scheduling, billing, customer collections, weighbridge operations and stock management, areas that the company said remain underserved by current software solutions.

The company already has a product live in the market: a resource planning tool that helps operators manage leads and staff absences.

The software is currently in use by customers in Ireland and the Nordic region, and the fresh investment will support expanded product development and international rollout.

WasteStart has already built a team of five, with plans to grow to more than a dozen employees by the same time next year as it scales its engineering and customer support capabilities.

Experienced in sector

Both founders bring substantial experience from within the waste technology sector.

Austin Ryan co-founded AMCS Group in 2003 alongside Jimmy Martin, building it into a global supplier of software and vehicle technology to the waste and environmental industries.

AMCS grew rapidly over the past two decades, culminating last year in Swedish private equity firm EQT acquiring a majority stake in the Limerick-based business in a deal that valued the company at €2 billion.

Ryan first met John Wallace when AMCS acquired The Solution Works, the Scottish software firm where Wallace was a member of the leadership team.

Following the acquisition, Wallace spent five years at AMCS, holding roles including Director of Product and Engineering and later Chief Technology Officer.
