Over 2,000 high-rise flats are to receive a door-to-door recycling service, to match the service already available to 83,000 residents of houses and low-rise flats in the borough.
” This is a great opportunity for flat dwellers to get the same ‘doorstep’ collection as people in street properties “
– Martin Johnson, Wandsworth
From July 10, the 70,000 scheme will provide orange sacks for paper, card, glass, cans and plastic bottles to Surrey Lane, Wendlesworth, William Willison and Arndale estates. They will be collected each week from outside households by estate cleaning staff.
If the trials are a success, housing and recycling officers plan to extend the scheme to a further 24,000 homes across the borough.
Martin Johnson, cabinet member for housing said: “This is a great opportunity for flat dwellers to get the same ‘doorstep’ collection as people in street properties.
“We will be working closely with residents and estate cleaning staff to overcome any problems of sacks cluttering corridors, landings and refuse areas. Between now and the launch we will be providing all households with full information on how to make the most of this new recycling initiative,” he added.
The orange sacks, which were introduced to the borough in 2003, have seen recycling increase by 120 per cent in three years. The current rate in Wandsworth is 20 per cent, which is short of its 24 per cent target for 2005/06, but makes it the one of the best-performing London boroughs for recycling.
