SITA begins recycling site upgrades in Surrey

Surrey Waste Management has put forward plans for a major revamp of one of the county's civic amenity sites in Redhill.

If the application is successful the SITA UK subsidiary will be investing 800,000 to upgrade the site at Earlswood.

The application is part of Surrey Waste Management's plans to redevelop all of the civic amenity sites in Surrey, to the point where it is achieving 60% recycling across the county's civic amenity sites.

Surrey council is also currently consulting with local residents with a view to finding locations for two incinerators to be built in the county. Until the facilities are built it is relying on increased recycling to cut its reliance on landfill.

Surrey Waste Management submitted the application to the county council on August 21 this year.

Split level
The upgrade will see the site become a split level facility, with the containers set lower than the residents so no climbing is required and collection vehicles can easily get to the containers.

In total Surrey has 15 civic amenity sites across the county. It is currently recycling just under 25% of the waste produced by its households.

Nicola Dowlen, spokeswoman for SITA UK, said: “The planning application to redevelop the Earlswood site is part of plans by Surrey Waste Management to improve recycling facilities in the county. We want to encourage the use of recycling, reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

“It is vital that we make recycling as easy as possible for as many people as possible. We hope that planning applications are successful, so we can improve the site for local residents and help the county achieve its recycling targets,” she added.
