“Should we recycle?” to be posed at Jigsaw conference

The logic and merits of recycling will be challenged at a London conference next week with a panel debate on the question “Why are we recycling?”

The event “Jigsaw: Solving the Recycling Supply Chain Puzzle” is a
recyclables market development conference organised by London Remade with a range of speakers including several from WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

WRAP director and US recycling pioneer David Dougherty will chair the session looking at “Why are we recycling?” and is inviting comments and contributions ahead of the event.

Mr Dougherty said: “I propose we look at the question in a broad way and take it back a step, asking 'When we look back to today in 20 years time, will we think, wow what a folly that recycling was?'

“We would be pleased to have any points around this topic sent to us in advance.”

Sustainability

Mr Dougherty said there are obivous reasons for recycling – “targets, policies and Directives – however these are not necessarily good reasons. Issues such as sustainability, resource management, corporate responsibility and economic development play a part and we would like panelists to consider these facets of the topic which impacts on an increasingly wide range of activities.”

Contributors can email info@londonremade.com
with questions or comments for the panel which will include Professor Paul Ekins, Forum for the Future and journalist Richard North, who is also a Media fellow at The Institute of Economic Affairs.

Among speakers at the conference will Stephen Timms MP, Minister for Trade and Industry who will talking on the topic of sustainable development, resource efficiency and UK competitiveness.
