Seminars pave the way for new plastic recycling campaign

The report argues constraints such as long-term contracts prevent local authorites from benefitting from technological advancements

A series of free seminars is being offered to local authorities and waste management contractors as part of a new WRAP campaign to boost plastic recycling collections.

The “Target Ten” campaign will see the Waste and Resources Action Programme aiming to help councils reach a target of collecting 10kg of plastic per household every year through kerbside collection schemes.

WRAP wants to double the amount of plastic bottles being collected for recycling to 10kg per household per year

This would double the current collection rates being achieved.

Four seminars are planned around England, beginning in Stoke-on-Trent on 28th February, then moving to Leeds on 1st March, Bristol on 7th March and ending in London on 8th March. They are, however, open to any UK authority or their recycling partners.

The seminars will allow councils and their recycling partners to assess their own plastics recycling schemes and discuss ways in which participation and capture rates can be improved. Input from the seminars will help to inform WRAP's wider Target Ten campaign, the organisation told letsrecycle.com today, including measures that could be taken to achieve the 10kg per household per year target.

Recycle Now
Plastic bottles are expected to feature within WRAP's national “Recycle Now” advertising campaign later this year.

“Plastic bottle collection rates have grown at a tremendous rate over the last three years, for which local authorities must be congratulated,” says Paul Davidson, WRAP’s Plastics Technical Manager. “To be approaching a collection rate of 20% is strong progress given that the UK was collecting just 3% in 2001.

“However, this does mean the UK is still throwing away more than four bottles in every five, so it is essential this increase in recycling is accelerated. These seminars are an opportunity for local authorities and waste management companies to share good practice with each other, and to discuss ways in which these rates can be further improved. We will also be introducing our new support toolkit for local authorities as well other initiatives in this area.”

More details of the seminars can be obtained by emailing Jill Burger at jill.burger@wrap.org.uk.
