Regulator welcomes SITA Trust&#39s focus on waste and recycling projects

Entrust, the landfill tax credit scheme regulator, has welcomed a pledge from SITA Environmental Trust that ii aims to exceed government targets for supporting sustainable waste management projects.

SITA Environmental Trust, which has recently been restructured to enable it to meet the targets, is to allocate 75% of its landfill tax credits to projects that support sustainable waste management which includes recycling, education and research and 40% will be spent directly on recycling.

Government targets, set in May, call for 65% of landfill tax credits to be spent on projects promoting sustainable waste management, a third of which should directly support recycling.

Lord Cranbrook, chairman of Entrust, said that the landfill tax credit scheme is delivering projects that help to reduce waste. “I commend SITA Environmental Trust’s commitment to the government’s recently proposed targets for sustainable waste management and recycling.”

He added: “The landfill tax credit scheme can – and is – delivering the type of project that helps to reduce waste and ensure it is managed in the most sustainable way. It is making a very real contribution to solving one of the most pressing environmental concerns facing us today and SITA Environmental Trust is set to magnify that contribution.”

Maggie Bignall, SITA Environmental Trust’s general manager, said: “We will take a proactive approach to reaching these targets. Our strategy is to find solutions to sustainable waste management issues, while simultaneously supporting local communities and their environment.”

SITA Environmental Trust was set up in 1997 and since then has invested more than 13 million in over 300 projects. Of this, 55% has gone to sustainable waste management and 45% to community and environmental enhancement.
