Policeman dies following collision with Viridor waste truck

A policeman has died in Sheffield following an incident involving a police motorcycle and a heavy goods vehicle operated by Viridor Waste Management.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Friday October 24 on the Prince of Wales road.

PC Glen Howe, 48, who lived in Sheffield and was married with a son aged 20 and a 24-year-old daughter, joined South Yorkshire Police in 1980 and had been a member of the Roads Policing Group for a number of years.

A full investigation is underway and Viridor Waste Management is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities. Viridor extends deep and sincere condolences to PC Howe's family, friends and colleagues.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “South Yorkshire Police can confirm that motorcycle officer, Glen Howe, died in a collision on Prince of Wales Road Sheffield on 24 October 2008. The incident happened at around 1.30pm between Sheffield Park Way and Main Road, Darnall and involved the police motorcyclist and a heavy goods vehicles.”

Head of operational support services for South Yorkshire Police, chief superintendent Richard Wilson, added: “This was a very sad day for everyone in South Yorkshire Police. Glen was a valued colleague and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. All our thoughts are with his family and friends during this very sad and tragic time.”
