The Trust which is developing local markets for recyclable materials in Wales under the CWMRE (Creating Welsh Markets for Recycling) programme which seeks to engage the private sector in developing new recycling processes and recycled products.
Conway Concrete Products, a Newport-based company will recycle the mixed glass into an aggregate replacement which is used to make concrete blocks. Some glass will also go to higher value end markets such as decorative glass and filtration media as the project aims to find both high and low value markets to give greater stability to glass recycling.
Onyxpak will fund the project through packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs). Most of the funds will go to local authorities and commercial recyclers who deliver the glass thereby directly supporting recycling collections.
Dr Keith Parry of the Wales Environment Trust welcomed Onyxpak's support for the project and said: “We are delighted that Onyxpak has decided to support Wales' first accredited glass reprocessing facility. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship.”
Compliance scheme manager Andrew Francis said: “We are proud to be associated with this exciting project. Onyxpak's support for this initiative will help the Wales Environment Trust develop new, local markets for glass waste, which will contribute towards meeting the UK's packaging recycling targets.”
