Widely regarded as a leader, innovator and people person, Chris leaves behind a lasting legacy across the sector and the many individuals he worked alongside.

Chris began his career in the ready-mix concrete sector, working at RMC and Redlands, before moving fully into waste and recycling.

He went on to hold senior roles at Drinkwater Sabey, BFI, Suez and Light Bros, playing a significant part in shaping the modern recycling industry.

Chris’s impact on the waste industry

Chris was “instrumental” in the late 1980s in helping to establish the first materials recycling facility (MRF) in West Sussex, helping bring together the various partners needed to make the project a success.

At a time when recycling was not driven by legislation and public engagement was far more challenging, Chris was a strong and vocal advocate for the benefits of recycling.

Throughout his career, he worked closely with major customers including British Airways and the British Airports Authority, and was also involved in setting up waste and event management operations, including Ryder Cup events.

He joined Light Bros shortly after it had introduced the first fridge recycling operations into the UK, and was involved in the early development of WEEE collections as the company expand beyond scrap metal recycling.

Chris continued working in the industry until the age of 77, driven by a genuine love for the sector and the people within it. Known for always having time for others, he was regarded as a positive influence and mentor to many.

‘Leaves behind a great legacy’

Beyond his professional achievements, Chris was deeply committed to his community.

He dedicated significant time and energy to organising events for groups including Cranleigh Football Club, the Paviers and the St George’s Day Club.

In recognition of his charitable work, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2018, an honour he was “extremely proud to receive”.

Roger Edwards, Chris’ son, said: “He was a hugely respected and loved leader in the waste and recycling industry for over 40 years.

“He had time for everyone and was a positive influence on so many people that had the privilege to work alongside him.

“He will be truly missed but leaves behind a great legacy, and I’m so lucky that he was my dad.”

Family and funeral plans

Chris is survived by his wife Jill, his sons Mark and Roger, and his five grandchildren.

A lifelong Brighton supporter, Chris greatly enjoyed family days out, especially those spent with his family in his villa in Spain.

Family was central to his life, and notably Chris worked alongside his sons Mark and Roger at Drinkwater, with all three sharing time in the same business.

The funeral will take place at 1pm on Wednesday 14 January at Eastbourne Crematorium.

The family have said that Chris was “such a people person” and would have wanted a well-attended send-off. All are welcome to attend, and those planning to do so are kindly asked to notify the family in advance to assist with numbers.
