S. Norton reports business as usual after fire
Metal recycler S. Norton has reported that it is “business as usual” following a large fire at its scrap yard in Southampton.
The fire at the Western Docks facility broke out just after 5am on the 11 June and involved more than 35,000 tonnes of scrap metal.
On-site machinery such as cranes and tug boats were in operation to assist with firefighting efforts.
Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
A S. Norton spokesperon said: “We apologise to our neighbours and the general public for any disruption this incident may have caused. The fire, which only affected one part of a stockpile, was handled promptly and professionally by the fire services, in conjunction with our own teams who are trained if such instances occur.
“Thankfully there were no injuries and minimal damage caused by the fire. We wish to thank all concerned including the Fire Service, ABP, Solent Stevedores and Norton’s own staff for their response to this incident. We will now be working closely with the relevant bodies to confirm the specific cause of this fire.”

DS Smith renews Reigate and Banstead partnership
DS Smith has announced a renewed partnership to manage around 7,000 tonnes of paper and card for recycling from Reigate & Banstead borough council.
Material collected from the borough will be recycled at DS Smith’s paper mill in Kemsley, Kent.
DS Smith and the council have been partnering since 2001, during which time the council reported that its recycling rate has “more than doubled” from 21% to 54.3%.
Commenting on the renewed partnership Ian Muir, recycling officer at Reigate & Banstead borough council said: “We’re delighted to continue our long and successful partnership with DS Smith. Paper and cardboard recycling is the corner stone of our ambitious recycling target and reprocessing our waste at a local paper mill reduces its environmental impact, which is important for many residents, as well as the council.”
Walsall invests in Mercedes-Benz Econic
Walsall council has invested in 8 Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse vehicles, to collect waste and recycling from households.
Walsall council sourced the low-entry trucks from primary contractor CPD, a vehicle specialist and a partner of Mercedes-Benz.
Features of the trucks include safety armoury with the manufacturer’s active brake assist 5 emergency braking system.
All are 26-tonne Econic 2627L models with rear-steer axles that assist drivers by reducing turning circles.
Den Edwards, Walsall council’s procurement manager for clean and green services, confirmed: “After studying whole-life costs of the fleet, downtime figures and feedback from the drivers and crews, we decided to return to the tried and trusted combination of Mercedes-Benz Econic chassis, CPD Titan body and Terberg hoist.”
Enva extends ScotRail contract
Enva has announced the extension of its contract with ScotRail, which will see it provide
over 40,000 waste collections a year from stations, depots and offices.
Delivered from Enva’s eight Scottish sites, the company manages over 4,000 tonnes of waste from passengers and operations including general waste, mixed recycling, food, glass, wood, green waste, WEEE, confidential material, fluorescent tubes, scrap metal and hazardous waste.
Enva has held the contract with ScotRail for over ten years.
Enva’s sales director, Stephen Cameron explained: “The extension of our contract with ScotRail recognises the excellent working relationship that has been developed over the years.
“With the continued hard work and commitment of our account managers and ScotRail’s Sustainability Team we are confident that we will further improve recycling rates and develop increasingly sustainable practices to support the development of Scotland’s circular economy.”

Newark-based waste and recycling company, Novati, has sponsored the latest track released by an upcoming artist, Kanda.
Kanda’s track ‘Latino Heat’ -is a collaboration with British Indian artist Panjabi MC.
Dave Gudgeon head of external affairs at Novati said: “We’ve taken the decision to support Kanda because he is an aspiring young artist who delivers important messages to the youth of today. His passionate messaging looks to raise awareness and challenge society on subjects such as knife crime and the Black Lives Matter movement.”
