The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Best Value site allows users to click on a map of the UK and a list of local counties to reach performance indicator information on their local councils taken from the Best Value Performance Indicators of 2000-2001 and Audit Commission Performance Indicator data from 1999-2000.
Commenting on the new website, Mr Leslie said: “The new website will provide more and better information about public services to local people by making Best Value performance information readily accessible to all members of the public.”

In order to get the key facts on each authority, from the start page users click on the map of the UK, then whichever county their local authority is located in, followed by the name of their local authority. Users interested in municipal waste information can then use the 'Tell me about…' drop-down menu to get hold of specific environment data for that authority.
By clicking on the 'in-depth information' link at the very top of the site, users can also compare the data between different local authorities. The site also provides a glossary of key terms to explain local performance measures in plain English.
As well as members of the public, the government hopes that local authorities will be able to make use of the new website as well as community recyclers and waste management companies.
“The website will help councils keep up to date, learn from best practice and encourage closer engagement between local authorities and the people they serve,” Mr Leslie said. “I am sure that people working in the voluntary and private sectors will find it a useful tool to enable them to understand more about Best Value.”
The website will be continually updated with the latest performance information, and will develop as more information becomes available to allow users to compare council performances over a number of years.
