The Mayor announced yesterday that the draft waste strategy will be sent to the Assembly for scrutiny and it is planned that the strategy will be launched next Tuesday, July 24.
The move follows much criticism of the Mayor for delaying the strategy several times. The delays have been caused by differences of opinion between the Mayor's advisors and although there is still disagreement over the form of the strategy, the Mayor has decided that it is best to get it out for public consultation so that the issues can be debated.
There has also been much confusion in the Mayor's office over when the waste strategy would be launched, with the Mayor's advisor saying last week that it would not be published until the autumn.
Last week the London Assembly said that if the Mayor was in difficulty as to the content of the strategy, he should set out the options and instigate a considered debate. The Assembly warned that further delay could see decisions about new waste facilities being made on an ad hoc basis which would be a disaster for the capital.
