Manchester man given £800 fine for dumping waste he was ‘paid to dispose of’

Mr O'Grady used Facebook to advertise his illegal services and dumped a large amount of waste across North Manchester

Manchester city council has announced it has prosecuted an individual for fly-tipping across north Manchester after he was paid to dispose of waste.

A statement published by the council outlined that Colin O’Grady, 51 of Berwick place admitted the offence and was sentenced to a 12-month community order, which required him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay a £80 victim surcharge and court costs of £800.

The council added that the case was heard at Manchester magistrates court and Mr O’ Grady was charged with five offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

According to the council, Manchester magistrates court heard that waste collected by Mr O’ Grady had been found dumped in locations in Gorton, Harpurhey, Moston and Openshaw.

The statement noted that the court was told that following information that waste was found in these areas, officers from the councils environmental crimes team reached out to residents whose waste was identified in the dumped piles. These residents confirmed they had hired O’Grady, operating under the name ‘OG Rubbish Removals’, to dispose of their waste.

The court heard that despite several attempts by authorities to interview O’Grady under caution, he did not respond.

‘Selfish act’

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, deputy leader of Manchester city council said: “Fly-tipping is a deeply selfish act and causes nothing but detriment to our communities. People do not deserve to have waste and filth strewn across their roads, simply because one individual decided they could make a quick profit. As we have seen in this case, this mindset did not pay off and the defendant will suffer the consequences.

“I am grateful to our Environmental Crime Team and legal officers who have successfully led this prosecution, and I want to reassure residents that if they are the victims of fly-tipping the Council will investigate and bring offenders to justice.”
