It has also generated one million megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy since opening 11 years ago.
According to Lincolnshire County Council, the facility – located near Lincoln and operated by FCC Environment – has helped reduce the amount of Lincolnshire’s non-recyclable waste sent to landfill by around 93%.
Capacity of 190,000 tonnes of waste
Over the past decade, the site has processed 1.78 million tonnes of waste and generated approximately 830,000 MWh of electricity for the National Grid, enough to supply 27,000 homes throughout Lincolnshire.
In addition to producing renewable electricity, the EfW process has also yielded 215,000 tonnes of incinerator bottom ash.
Juergen Schaper, Operational Director at FCC Environment, said: “We are so proud of this plant and the contribution it makes to society.
“These environmentally friendly and cost-saving results make a real difference for the people of Lincolnshire and we remain focused on continuing to exceed performance expectations in our successful partnership with the Council as we carry on creating valuable electricity, jobs and community support for the county.”
The Lincolnshire EfW plant is designed to treat up to 190,000 tonnes of residual waste each year, with the capacity to generate 13.1 megawatts (MW) of electricity at any one time.
It features flue gas cleaning and emission monitoring systems and uses combustion and pollution abatement technology to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
Stephen Lormer, General Manager of the facility, added: “None of this could have been done without the hard-working and dedicated team of 39 people at the plant working around the clock and all through the year to maintain operations.”
Lincolnshire Council and FCC Environment
The plant celebrated its 10th year of operation last year, inviting children from St Andrew’s C.E Primary School who had won the Waste Free Lunch Challenge to attend the celebration.
The council is now 12 years into its 25-year partnership with FCC Environment for residual waste management, a deal that encompasses collection, treatment and transfer across the county.
The plant is expected to save Lincolnshire County Council “around £30 million” over the contract’s lifetime, due to end in 2039
In March 2025, North Lincolnshire Green Energy Park’s development plans for a 650,000 tonne Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) were approved for Flixborough in North Lincolnshire.
