The site is the first major infrastructure to be developed under the Waste Partnership's – known as Re3's- £600 million contract with Waste Recycling Group, which was signed in 2006 to develop waste solutions over the next 25 years (see letsrecycle.com story).
Among the new recycling facilities on offer are containers for materials such as lightbulbs, household batteries, printer cartridges and drinks cartons.
Once inside the indoor centre, visitors can deposit their unwanted items over a low-height wall or directly in containers, making it easier and safer for people to recycle.
Re3 project manager Oliver Burt said: “We've tried to keep things as simple as possible, but at the same time this site is light-years away from what residents are used to. The overall experience will combine both ease of access with awareness raising and maximised recycling.”
Andrew Woolcock, general manager for specially created WRG subsidiary Re3 Ltd, said: “The new waste management parks provide and excellent opportunity to raise waste awareness, encourage people to manage their waste in a more sustainable way and most importantly provide convenient all weather facilities so that materials can be collected for recycling and recovery.”

As well as providing new facilities at the site off Island Road, Re3's contract with WRG provides for the construction of a materials recycling facility, transfer station and recycling centre at Longshot Lane in Bracknell, which should be open by 2009.
Both waste management parks will include visitor and education centres to support waste minimisation.
WRG are also responsible for rollout of kerbside collections and securing composting facilities, and will send at least some of central Berkshire's waste to the Lakeside Energy from Waste plant at Colnbrook near Slough, which is a joint venture run by Viridor and Grundon Waste Management Ltd.
