Entry call as Awards for Excellence trophies are crafted

Trophies are now being handcrafted in North Wales from recycled glass for the 2006 Awards for Excellence in recycling and waste management. And, with the closing date in early September, local authorities, industry and the recycling and waste sectors are being reminded that entries can still be submitted for the nine categories available.

To enter the Awards, which are supported by Defra and the Environment Agency, simply submit a summary of the entry with available supporting material if possible. Categories span the commercial and industrial sectors as well as projects and work involving local authorities and the waste management and recycling industries.

The trophies are made from recycled bottle and window glass by Anne Smith Glass Designs. Mrs Smith explained. “The award plates are made in layers, with the green and blue awards logo cut from bottle glass and then sandwiched between two panes of window glass. The kiln fuses the layers together over 24-hours at about 900c.”

Alternatively, if you would like to make a nomination, including individuals for the local authority recycling champion or commercial recycling champion, email: news@letsrecycle.com or tel: 020 7633 4506.

Judging takes place during September and finalists in each category will be invited to the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon which takes place at London’s Savoy Hotel.

Dedication

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “With all the publicity about recycling over the Bank Holiday weekend, any doubts that the UK is making good progress should be dispelled by the Awards for Excellence. We are already seeing exciting entries which show how a huge amount of effort and dedication is involved in pushing recycling and good waste management practice forward.

In 2005 news presenter Mary Nightingale presented the partnership trophy to Graham Warren, Viridor regional director for the south east, and representatives of the Suffolk Recycling Consortium

“One feature of the entries so far this year is how progress is being made in raising recycling, in some cases from low levels, and also by some of the higher achievers who continue to develop their schemes.”
