This is despite the overall number of permitted landfill sites having fallen throughout the year, according to the data.
On Friday (28 October), the Agency published a summary of available information on the waste accepted and treated at permitted waste facilities in England in 2015. This stated that a total of 43.9 million tonnes of waste was disposed of at 343 landfill sites across England throughout the year.
Capacity
The figures indicate that this has risen compared to 2014, when 41.3 million tonnes of waste were sent to landfill. Overall remaining landfill capacity in England stands at close to 471 million cubic metres, the Environment Agency suggests, compared to 484 million cubic metres in 2014.
Despite this reported rise in waste to landfill – the overall volume of waste sent for incineration is claimed to have risen, with a total of 10.4 million tonnes treated compared to 8.6 million tonnes in 2014.
In total the overall tonnage of waste managed across England increased the figures indicate – topping 191.1 million tonnes in 2015, up from 187 million tonnes during the previous 12 months.
