Binn Group, which carries out domestic and commercial waste collection services regionally, will take over operations at the Shore Road waste transfer site, where Holden has operated for over 70 years.
The acquisition forms a part of a larger expansion policy by Binn Group and sees 10 employees transfer from Holden to the Glenfarg firm.

Perth firm Holden is long-established in the area having developed the original scrap business into a skip hire, waste management and recycling operation at the site.
According to Binn Group chief executive Allan MacGregor the deal represents an ‘exciting phase’ in the company’s growth. He added that the new site would meet aspirations for a ‘high-profile Perth satellite base’.
He said: “Binn Group has a long term plan to expand into urban satellite sites in key locations throughout Scotland.
“Buying over Holden’s well-established business within Perth fulfils the first phase of that ambition.”
Opportunity
The company’s managing director Brian Harkins added: “We see ourselves as a progressive recycling and waste management company going forward with a bit of momentum moving into other sectors – it is our intention to have organic plants throughout the central belt of Scotland.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the company – the main addition is it gives a presence in the city of Perth and enables us to develop the recycling business which we believe will be a growth sector.”
History
Established over 20 years ago by father and son John and Allan MacGregor, Binn Group has expanded its landfill and skip hire business to become a well-recognised player within Scotland’s recycling and resource management industry. Currently, the group employees over 100 people.
The newly-acquired Shore Road site had previously been the location for a planned £100 million, 75,000 tonnes-per-year energy from waste plant – under a partnership between Holden and Grundon Waste Management. However, plans for the plant were blocked in 2009 and never subsequently revived (see letsrecycle.com story).
Binn Group has indicated that it has no plans to re-examine the proposals for an energy from waste facility on the site.
Commenting on the deal, a spokesperson for Holden Environmental’s managing director Robert Holden, said: “After careful consideration it was determined that the long term success of the business was best secured by selling to the Binn Group.
“They have undertaken to continue the first-class service that our loyal customers have come to expect over the years. We wish them well in their new venture.”
