Aberdeenshire-based Keenan Recycling has completed its ambitious expansion plans to develop the largest capacity in-vessel composting facility in Europe which uses Vertical Composting Unit technology.

The organics recycling company now operates an 18 chamber vertical composting unit (VCU) at its New Deer site, which takes the firms processing capacity up to 45,000 tonnes-a-year from its previous capacity of 30,000 tonnes-a-year.
Berkshire-based VCU Europa completed the first phase of its installation at the end of 2008 as part of 3.2 million expansion plan outlined by Keenan Recycling in November 2007 (see letsrecycle.com story).
And, the further six VCU systems mark the completion of expansion plans outlined in January 2011 (see letsrecycle.com story).

Commenting on the development, Grant Keenan, managing director of Keenan Recycling, said: We are delighted with the way the project has been handled. From placing the order last December the delivery has been seamless and further reinforces our belief in the technology and in VCU Europas capability.
The new chambers are already put to good use to meet the ever increasing demand for process capacity in the area.
Keenan uses the New Deer site to process food and garden waste collected commingled from Aberdeen city council, as well as a range of commercial food wastes from within the Scottish region.
The company added that the inclusion of the VCU system into its processing had led to the production of exceptionally mature material, which meets PAS 100 requirements after just two weeks of maturation.

The 18-chamber VCU system was also developed in order to complement Keenan Recyclings commercial food waste recycling scheme, which was launched in July 2010 (see letsrecycle.com story).
