ECT signs 1.2 million recycling contract with Hackney

ECT Recycling has signed a new 18-month contract run a recycling service in the London Borough of Hackney.

The community-owned not-for-profit organisation signed the 1.2 million contract with the possibility of a further 18-month extension.

The new service for Hackney will involve a 'green box' recycling scheme to allow its 56,000 households to recycle up to 40% of their household waste. Collections will begin in spring 2003 and will pick up glass, cans, paper, tin foil, textiles, shoes, oil, batteries and Yellow Pages.

Commenting on the new contract, ECT's recycling operations director, Rhona Coulter, said: “This new contract shows that community recycling is going from strength to strength and we are delighted to help the London Borough of Hackney meet its statutory recycling targets.”

The borough's 32,000 medium to high rise flats will be given mini recycling centres in a new estates service for glass, cans and paper. At the moment, only 2.2% of household waste is recycled in Hackney.

The Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said: “Introducing doorstep recycling and recycling 18% of the borough's waste by 2006 is one of my priorities. This contract with ECT is one of the means by which we can achieve our target.”

The new contract strengthens the position of the company in East London – ECT Recycling signed a contract with Waltham Forest in 2001 (see letsrecycle.com story).
