Search for companies to boost compost confidence

The Waste and Resources Action Programme is looking for commercial companies to trial the use of compost.

The organisation wants businesses that determine compost to be a good substitute for traditional fertilisers to spread the word, in a bid to increase the outlets for composted products.

Landscape contractors, farmers, golf courses and professional growers are a few of the businesses that WRAP is looking to trial compost made from green waste. In particular, the businesses will be trying out compost certified under the new PAS 100 composting standard.

WRAP is now seeking producers of compost to partner up with the various commercial users of compost in order to form the trials, which the organisation will help fund.

Talking up

Compost producers that take part in the trial will be expected to provide data comparing the PAS100 compost with techniques that would have been used without the compost. The users will then be expected to talk-up composted products through WRAP's organics department.

WRAP has also said that trials may involve a third company, for example a growing media, to ensure that the compost is a finished ready to use product.

The closing date for applications is Monday July 31 2006 at 12.30 pm. Work on any project is scheduled to begin on August 31 2006, with completion by August 2007. However WRAP has said this can be extended to the end of March 2008 if need be.

A spokeswoman for WRAP said: “Product trials are an effective way to increase confidence and experience in using recycled products. They enable users to test the product and see the benefits for themselves in their own environment.”
