The SITA agreement for 10 areas is one part of Aylesford’s 5 million country-wide front-end loader contracts for the next five-years.
SITA has the paperback contracts for West Midlands, Hampshire, West Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Reading, Wokingham, Wycombe, Greenwich and Suffolk. The arrangement will see SITA collecting from Aylesford’s recycling banks. The material will then be transported SITA transfer facilities or to nominated Aylesford sites to be sorted and then bulked and delivered to Aylesford Newsprint in Kent for reprocessing. SITA previously had the contract to service East Sussex, Reading and Wokingham.
Paul Dumpleton, recycling manager for SITA, said: “The front-end loader contracts are worth a substantial amount of money over the next five years. SITA has been a major service provider to Aylesford Newsprint for many years. The contract to service additional paperbanks in ten of their business areas is further evidence of the commitment that both companies have to each other. SITA currently provides raw material, waste management and bulk collection services to Aylesford and will continue to support both the existing and anticipated expansion mill capacity in the coming years.”
The contracts, which were renewed on April 1, also see a new partnership forged between Aylesford Newsprint and Shanks, who won the contract for Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Andrew Perkins, operations controller for Aylesford Newsprint, said: “We see the paperbank contract as the starting point for a relationship that has the ability to develop many recycling initiatives, benefiting both companies and the communities in which we operate.”

Buckinghamshire-based Shanks will use two front-end loader vehicles to collect from Aylesford’s recycling banks. Shanks out-bid Firbank and Biffa, the previous contractors in the region.
Steve Crook, regional manager for Shanks, said: “Working with an experienced reprocessor gives us the ideal opportunity of developing secure recycling markets. This partnership also supports Shanks’ commitment to offer a range of collection services for recycled materials for both the private and public sector markets.”
The other contracts have been awarded to Aherns for Essex, Grundon for Gloucestershire and Worksop Waste for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Biffa has the contract for Wales and the West and Elite Environmental has won the contract for Sussex.
