‘Mega skips’ to combat Wandsworth fly-tipping

Wandsworth council will this weekend reintroduce ‘mega skips’ across the borough in five locations with high levels of fly-tipping.

Residents can bring up to six items to deposit for free

The move comes as the council has also published more videos on YouTube of fly-tippers ‘caught on camera’, as part of efforts to clamp down on the issue.

On Saturday (16 October) residents are invited to bring any bulky waste items or black bags to the skips, including items such as mattresses, furniture and cardboard. However, residents are not permitted to bring paint, concrete, cement, or large electrical appliances such as fridges. The skips will be open between 9am and12pm.

The council has introduced a limit of six items per household to ensure enough people can deposit items.

As part of the scheme, the council will be collating figures of fly-tipping prior to the event and afterwards to judge their effectiveness.

This is a great opportunity for people to dispose of their unwanted household items for free

‘Opportunity’

Cllr Steffi Sutters, council spokesperson for the environment said: “This is a great opportunity for people to dispose of their unwanted household items for free.

“We spend more than £4 million a year on dealing with the blight of fly-tipping and picking litter off our streets, so anything we can do to reduce this problem is a positive step forward.”

Council staff will also be on hand to provide recycling bags as well as offering advice and the day itself is part of the MyWandsworth campaign. If the trial is a success, then the council will repeat it.

Caught on camera

The council has also brought back it’s ‘caught on camera’ series on YouTube, where it publishes CCTV of fly-tippers and information on how to report them.

Wandsworth council says nearly two-thirds of fly-tips involve household waste while the most common size category for fly-tipping incidents is equivalent to a small van load.

Councillor Steffi Sutters, environment spokesperson said: “Thanks to everyone who has got in touch following the last episode of Caught on Camera.

“We’ve fined two people for fly-tipping in Thrale Road in the last month, so please do keep letting us know if you recognise anyone from one of our videos.”

An example of one of the videos can be seen below.

Wandsworth council serves around 329,000 residents. It recorded a recycling rate of 23.7% in 2019/20.
