London waste adviser backs Real Nappy Week

Darren Johnson, advisor to the Mayor of London on environmental issues, today backed calls by the Women’s Environmental Network for London parents to support Real Nappy Week.

Disposable nappies in London account for over 100,000 tonnes of waste every year. Households with a baby in disposable nappies double the amount of rubbish they throw out every week. Real Nappy Week aims to raise awareness of environmentally friendly alternatives to disposable nappies.

Darren Johnson, said today: ”Waste in London has been increasing and is a major social and environmental problem. As a result the costs of waste disposal are rising and it costs nearly 300million a year to manage municipal waste in the capital each year. As nappies make up 4% of household waste there are millions of pounds of potential savings that could be gained.

“Some London boroughs already raise awareness of modern washable nappies and promote local nappy laundering services. Despite the convenience of disposable nappies, there are other choices available out there. It’s a step parents can make that will minimise the waste we produce in the capital.”

The Mayor is currently developing a waste strategy, which will go to the Assembly for scrutiny in the summer and be published for consultation in the autumn, several months later than originally planned.
