Fire crews tackle Kirkby waste site blaze

Fire crews are continuing to tackle a fire at waste transfer and recycling facility run by CCC Waste Management at Simonswood Industrial Park in Kirkby, which broke out late last night.

Fire crews from Skelmersdale and Ormskirk were called to the location at 11.42pm on Sunday (12 June) following reports of a fire.

In a statement, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said that once crews had arrived on the scene the response to the incident was quickly escalated to eight fire engines, with the additional four coming from Greater Manchester and Merseyside fire services to assist with water relay at the site.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue added that the fire was contained within a building housing a mixture of household recyclable waste. The overall tonnage of material involved in the fire has yet to be disclosed by the Fire Service.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire using ground monitors to ensure that surrounding businesses were not affected. However, residents living nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke plume created by the fire.

Five heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) which were present on the site were protected from the fire using a water curtain.

The fire was surrounded by 05:30hrs and now firefighters are concentrating on damping down and trying to gain access to seats of fire through the building.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the investigation is “ongoing” to establish the cause of the blaze. He added: “At around 5am on today the majority of the fire has been tackled. But crews are still attempting to extinguish some smaller blazes.”

When contacted by letsrecycle.com this morning CCC Waste Management declined to comment on the fire.

The company processes waste from commercial and industrial sources on the site, as well as sorting materials from waste management firms and local authority household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) according to its website.

Materials handled on-site include plastics, cardboard, UPVC, clear film, metal, glass, wood and aggregates. CCC Waste Management was established in 1986, and operates from the 20-acre Simmonswood site.
