FCC beat Viridor Dunbar to lift 2022 Waste World Cup

FCC Environment has won the 2022 Waste World Cup, beating a team representing Viridor’s Dunbar facility 2-0 in a hard-fought final.

Organised by letsrecycle.com and celebrating its 20th edition, the six-a-side tournament welcomed 41 mixed-gender teams from across the waste sector to Beaconsfield Rugby Club, Buckinghamshire, on 1 July.

As in previous years, the tournament began in a group format, with FCC overcoming teams from LondonEnergy 4-1, Cawleys 3-0, Reconomy’s compliance division 2-0 and Vanden Recycling 8-0 to enter the top tier of the knockout competition.

Viridor Dunbar overcame Kenny Waste 2-0, letsrecycle.com‘s parent company ROAR B2B 3-1, Biffa High Wycombe 7-0 and Reconomy’s recycling division 2-1 to qualify from their group.

In the tournament’s latter stages, FCC thrashed a team from N+P Group 3-0 before sneaking through to the final with a 1-0 win against Viridor Reserves Reserves, who belied their unflattering name.

In their own route to the final, Viridor Dunbar first snuck through with a 5-4 win on penalties against last year’s winners Shred Station, before dispatching Biffa Leicester 2-1 in the semis.

The stage was set for a showdown between indisputably the tournament’s best teams, though Viridor Dunbar suffered a blow as they lost their goalkeeper to a broken wrist before the game.

After a gruelling day, FCC had just too much for Viridor Dunbar, scoring in the first half and in the game’s final minutes to clinch the Cup.

Winners

Other trophies up for grabs included the Vase, Bowl, Shard and Jug. Teams qualified for these competitions based on their standing in the group stage.

Mace Group saw off Creative Waste Solutions 1-0 to take home the Vase, the second-tier competition.

The Bowl was won by Suez Manchester, who comprehensively beat R Collard 4-0 in the final to seal victory.

Wastepack lifted the Shard with a nervy win on penalties over Mcauliffe Group, while ROAR B2B beat Recycleye 3-1 to claim the Jug.

Next year’s tournament will also take place at Beaconsfield Rugby Club and will be held on 30 June.

Fletchers Waste Management, Viridor and Vanden Recycling sponsored this year’s event. Played for the most part in glorious sunshine, the day also hosted a pair of buzzards who rode thermals and swooped low over the pitches throughout.
