Vehicles
For the waste management sector vehicles ranging from the "traditional" RCV through to hook loaders, materials handlers and wheeled loaders all have an essential part to play.
Innovation in design is a byword now for the products on offer from a range of manufacturers. Some now have four-wheel drive to cope with difficult surfaces and gradients while others are now featuring in cab messages about services, faults and maintenance requirements.
Developments in RCVs include the provision of low entry cabs with increased window areas to boost visibility, better quality seating and handrails as well as other features such as handwash basins.
Technology is also being used in terms of navigation and property visit record-keeping to maximise efficient use of the RCV.
Considerable efforts are being made on the safety side with modern controls and the use of technology. Design too is a factor, such as by Denis Eagle in its latest RCVs which include a front under run bumper designed to meet the latest road vehicle regulations.
And, a range of developments are underway to minimise carbon footprints, including the use of alternative fuels. One pioneer in this area is the waste management company SITA UK which in London is trialling a vehicle that uses a mix of fuel made from landfill gas and diesel which aims to reduce diesel consumption by around 65%.
Handling equipment is also vital in materials recycling facilities, composting sites, paper depots and other materials operations.
Here, operators are benefiting too from modern designs and more efficient and reliable products enabling fewer machines to be used plus with the use of attachments, greater flexibility in machine usage. For example, a four wheel steer Loadall from JCB gives greater manoeuvrability and all round vision with a low boom line.
On letsrecycle.com, we aim to give you all the latest news and information about vehicles and plant ranging from the latest in refuse collection vehicles through to baler developments and the use of technology.
