Street Scene
While the recycling and waste industry is primarily about logistics, Banks, Bins and Containers are crucial for the transport of material. Metal thicknesses, hinge details and loading points are all crucial aspects of larger containers as are the performance of locking bars and clips. Competition is fierce in the bin market with suppliers keen to promote their own wares and there are now increasing supplies of bins made in the UK. One bin ‘fashion’ at present, is ‘on-the-go’ which involves placing recycling bins on the streets or in shopping centres to provide more opportunity for the public to recycle away from home. In part, this is driven by the need to capture more aluminium drink cans.
Street sweeping is becoming a far more modern service than in the past. Some parts of the country now have facilities to recycle large amounts of street sweepings while there is ongoing investment in cleaning fleets. Most mechanised sweepers can expect a useful life of about 4 years and around 8-10,000 hours and there are a number of manufacturers who can offer a choice of models. Issues to consider include performance, costs, ease of maintenance and reliability.
