Brazil waste prosecution gets underway
2 December 2011
Four men and two companies are due to appear at City of London Magistrates Court this afternoon (December 2) in relation to offences concerning the alleged illegal export of prohibited waste to Brazil.
-

- The containers of waste were inspected on their return to the UK from Brazil
The start of legal proceedings follows a complex two-year investigation by the Environment Agency's National Enforcement Service.
In 2009 the Environment Agency repatriated 89 containers from Brazil after being notified by the Brazilian Authorities - the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) - that they contained waste (see letsrecycle.com story) .
The case was widely covered in the national press at the time, and caused some embarrassment for the UK.
Three men were arrested in July 2009 in relation to the Environment Agency’s investigation into the case (see letsrecycle.com story), and bailed for a second time in November 2009 because the investigation was taking longer than expected.
The hearing is set to take place from 2pm this afternoon.
